Andy and Misha Wilkinson of Misha’s Vineyard had two new entries into The Real Review Wine Classifications of New Zealand. Misha’s Vineyard

The Real Review Wine Classification Feature Week

It is all about quality. The Real Review Wine Classifications of New Zealand and Australia were launched in 2023 at a splendid dinner at the Sydney Opera House. It was a great setting for a Wine Classification that had involved many thousands of blind tastings stretching back 10 vintages at the very least and several decades in many cases.

Any year, they can move up the scale to a higher level but they can’t be demoted inside four years.

Our objective was to identify the best wines and to rank them into three tiers: 1 Merit wines that regularly earn gold and silver medal ratings, 2 Merit wines that achieve gold and high silver ribbons in recent vintages, with top vintages achieving 96 points or more, and 3 Merit wines, at the very pinnacle of wine quality with the potential to score 98 points in excellent vintages. Fewer than one bottle in 200 achieve that level of quality.

This is our first annual update of the Wine Classifications of New Zealand and Australia. I will let Huon Hooke write about the Wine Classification of Australia while I, naturally enough, will focus on the Wine Classification of New Zealand.

282 New Zealand wines re-qualified in the 2023 update. Any year, they can move up the scale to a higher level but they can’t be demoted inside four years. That will ensure continuity in the face of one or two poor vintages. If after four years the wine’s quality falls below the tier’s standard it will lose a Merit or be de-classified. Each classified wine meeting the annual Classification assessment will have its tier extended for another four years.

Four wines were “up-tiered” (see lists below).

My sincere congratulations to everyone who contributed to the truly marvelous wines we reviewed for the Classification. I think I can speak for all of the judges when I say you made our task much more pleasurable. New Zealand wines have never looked as good as they do right now, although I expect they will move up another notch by this time next year.
